"A cup of coffee is a miracle, a wonderful assemblage of relationships."

This classic follows coffee's journey around the world, from London to Brazil, telling in fascinating detail and amusing anecdotes the singular history of the legendary commodity - from the discovery that chewing on the beans were keeping goats awake in Yemen to the author's own experiences with the bean in 1935.

Referred to as a "documentary novel" back to coffee's inception, H. E. Jacobs pioneered the concept of creative nonfiction. This narrative style combines the reality of nonfiction with the epic presentation and prose of fiction. This genre has exploded into popularity and remains so today. Coffee tells the story of this popular beverage in short, fun-to-hear essays that will entertain anyone who enjoys a good, strong cup of coffee.

I figure, I drink so much of the stuff, I may as well educate myself on it. I found the book completely fascinating, as it was just as much about world geography, European history and economic theory as it was about coffee. If you like those things, you will probably enjoy this book. If not, it may come across as a bit dry and obscure. For my caffeinated purposes it was just the ticket.

The author reveals intriguing information about the history of coffee through the rascals that discovered it, coveted it, and brought the savory bean to the world.

Jacob undertook was aimed at reconciling differences. In one sense, this story was intended to promote reconciliation between the Arab and Western worlds, with the idea of coffee as the “wine of Islam” (as we learn in the introduction from the 1998 edition). The great irony, of course, is that although this book was written 61 years ago, the message of reconciliation is probably more important today than it was in 1935.COFFEE is prescient in a second way: As a “documentary novel,” pioneering the concept of creative nonfiction by combining the reality of nonfiction with the presentation and prose of fiction, it preceded and helped lay the groundwork for what became known as the new New Journalism, as practiced by Tom Wolfe, Hunter Thompson, Gay Talese and others, beginning in 1965.Finally, by anticipating the tremendous popularity of coffee in the United States, with a Starbucks on nearly every corner, Jacob was prescient in yet another way.Chock full of wonderfully written stories from exotic places, this book is a wonderful way to pass the time while enjoying your favorite cup of Joe at Starbucks, Pete’s or whatever your preferred coffee house may be.Daniel Berman, Amazon authorThe Newest Story of O ...
