As rush hour came to a close on the evening of May 25, 1950, one of Chicago’s new fast, colorful, streamlined streetcars—known as a Green Hornet—slammed into a gas truck at State Street and 62nd Place. The Hornet’s motorman allegedly failed to heed the warnings of a flagger attempting to route it around a flooded underpass, and the trolley, packed with commuters on their way home, barreled into eight thousand gallons of gasoline. The gas erupted into flames, poured onto State Street, and quickly engulfed the Hornet, shooting flames two hundred and fifty feet into the air. More than half of the passengers escaped the inferno through the rear window, but thirty-three others perished, trapped in front of the streetcar’s back door, which failed to stay open in the ensuing panic. It was Chicago’s worst traffic accident ever—and the worst two-vehicle traffic accident in U.S. history.

I also have the book about the Malbone Street Wreck and have read that. I thought that that wreck was really bad, but it can't hold a candle to this one. GET THIS BOOK!

Awesome By Lenard Marcus Since Chicago transportation history is my hobby (streetcars, interurbans, el trains) and I have an extensive book/picture collection, I wanted to add this book. Having read it I am astonished by the details and the narrative that the author lays out. His words bring life to a tragic, avoidable accident that I had only read about as I was only 2 years old when it happened. An incredible story-well written.

Thomas I first learned of this tragedy in the early 1990's, while on a GMC new look bus excursion with the Pacific Bus Museum. The safety features of restored San Francisco Municipal Railway bus #3270 was being discussed. Someone mentioned the 1950 Chicago streetcar disaster as the catalyst for safety features on city buses today. I simply had to learn more about this disaster, so I researched it in city newspapers around the country. The New York Times and Time magazine covered the tragedy as well as all other media sources, with the exception of Chicago newspapers. General Motors designed their 1959 new look bus with passenger safety in mind. In the event of an emergency, passengers could simply kick out the windows and exit the coach with relative ease. This was not the case on Chicago streetcar #7078 on that tragic day in May 1950. The Green Hornet Streetcar Disaster captures the events of this tragedy from the start of motorman Paul Manning's shift to his demise along with 32 other souls. This book takes the reader along and one has to feel that he or she is aboard Chicago streetcar #7078, too. The only difference, the reader gets off the streetcar one stop before it crashes and now becomes a spectator and later, an investigator. This is a very good book. The only thing missing is a map tracing Paul Manning's fateful and final trip. I've included an illustrated map and timeline in my copy of this book.
