Marcus I read quite a few "For dummies" books and unfortunately this has been one of the most disappointing ones.I expected that after reading the book I would have a basic understanding on how a drone works, an insight on its components, dynamics and the general knowledge on how to operate a drone at a basic level or maybe even how to proceed in case I would like to build my own.Unfortunately I found none of the above. What was most irritating is how little there is actually on drones. Most of the book is about how to shop or behave on the internet, basic and watered down introductions on related consumer electronics (cameras, editing software etc..) and somewhat product specific reviews that (naturally) are already outdated. All this might be useful advice to anyone who is a dummy about most of contemporary consumer electronics, yet it should not become the main point of a volume that is supposed to speak about drones. Each section starts with way too long introductions, which seam to have the only function to add text.Once all such "bloatware" we are left with about 30% of drone specific text, which is mainly an edited extract from various user manuals, as the book only speaks about ready-to-fly platforms, basically becoming a purchasing guide for products that are already outdated. The same obsolescence issue affects the legal section: it should be updated ASAP, as with recent regulation changes readers might get into trouble. The book often tells you about what you should pay attention to, without actually telling you how you are supposed to do it.Is it all bad? Off course it isn't! Among all the bloatware, incorrect phrases ("such as high rate of speed" to indicate speed) and repetitions there is plenty of good advice for starters, especially in the safety section. Nevertheless when purchasing a book I expect to receive more structured information than what I can receive by a 10 min. google search. Personally I found more and better structured information on http://myfirstdrone.com/ than in this volume.

Written in an easy to understand style, it covers everything you need to know about drones. As Mark LaFay says in his introduction, he assumes nothing other than that the reader knows how to use a computer and the Internet. From the basics of understanding how a drone works to buying, flying and various uses for drones, LaFay has authored a thorough book for anyone at all interested in drones. I'm not exactly a dummy but I'm no aviation expert either so this book was perfect for me.I found it extremely informative, especially the section on understanding the laws that govern the use of drones. And anyone who has ever taken a selfie will like the section on using drones for aerial photography. While there is a wealth of information here, LaFay is also a witty writer, making this an entertaining as well as educational read.Even if you have no intention of actually buying a drone (I'm still several months away from buying my own), Drones for Dummies is a fascinating look at one of the fastest growing segments of consumer technology today.Definitely recommended .. would make a great gift as well.

To be a bit more specific, I've owned numerous micro-quads, a Parrot AR drone 2.0, and have built a few 'copters too. I still learned a lot from this book. The only "constructive criticism" I can offer is that the book does not cover micro-copters like my favorites - the Blade Nano QX and its FPV (first person view) version, the Blade Nano QX FPV. These micro-copters are great for flying indoors and through the house. The book recommends against indoor flying. It's true that craft like the Parrot AR drone are hard to fly indoors - the prop wash makes for a very turbulent hallway, etc. But... micro-quads are great indoors and allow for quick flights every day without hassle.Over all, the book seems to suggest the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 or the DJI Phantom with GoPro. These are great choices for ready to fly quads. The book also covers care and fixing by pointing out that the devices should be inspected before and after each flight and even gives examples of pre-flight and post-flight checklists. Other kinds of flying craft are mentioned, such as fixed wing drones, but the book is really about multi-copters. The book does not really cover the repair budget. A new pilot should plan on spending at least half the price of the drone in first year repairs. In the case of a non-FPV micro-quad, they're cheap, plan to destroy a few. Also, the book doesn't mention that the manufacturers forums and online videos should be checked for "required" modifications. For example, the Parrot's landing gear really are fragile and that zip-tie modification is indispensable. There is a fair amount of text dedicated to not annoying others (being a "bonehead" - rhymes with drone head) and knowing and obeying the law. These are important issues. As for how current the book is, it discusses the FAA's proposed rules that issued in February 2015. So, that's great. Multi-copter technology has been evolving at an amazing pace over the past few years. It would appear that this book will become dated quickly, but there are big sections that will hold up well for at least a few years. For example, the proper ways to deal with batteries is unlikely to change. Nor will the parts on planning video shoots, taking care of the equipment, checklists, ...The parts that I found most eye opening and instructive had to do with cameras, video, and connecting socially with like minded pilots. Regarding cameras, the reasons for using a GoPro are well argued although I'm more of a mobius guy because my machines wreck gloriously and often. People more concerned with getting usable video and not crashing would probably prefer the GoPro. The book also covers way better cameras that can be used for taking great video but cost way more, weigh a lot more, and are for people with advanced budgets. On the subject of video, the tools for editing are listed and described. Most interestingly the book introduces some tools for removing camera jitter such as Youtube and Turbo Video Stabilizer for cheap and Adobe After Effects for not so cheap. The steps for getting that video out of a 'copter and into a computer are described, including getting video and images into a chromebook. Also, new to me, the Pixlr chromebook app can edit images. Interesting because the "Baseflight" chromebook app is a nice ground station and configuration tool for certain quad copter flight controllers.Another great section is the one covering using social media to meet other 'copter addicts. These are by far the most important resources for finding out how to deal with the problems that absolutely will crop up. Things like why your quad is flipping over instead of taking off. Also, the author mentions the glory of Youtube. I've spent untold hours watching 'copter how-to videos on Youtube. The book details using google groups, facebook, and manufacturers web sites to ask questions and connect with people - including observations that many of these forums are moderated and abusive/stupid posts won't stay online. To sum it up, this book is well done, timely, readable, and more informative than I could have ever dreamed of.
