A New York Times best seller!

Our world is about to change. In Digital Destiny: How the New Age of Data Will Change the Way We Live, Work, and Communicate, Shawn DuBravac, chief economist and senior director of research at the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), argues that the groundswell of digital ownership unfolding in our lives signals the beginning of a new era for humanity. Beyond just hardware acquisition, the next decade will be defined by an all-digital lifestyle and the "Internet of Everything" - where everything, from the dishwasher to the wristwatch, is not only online, but acquiring, analyzing, and utilizing the data that surrounds us. But what does this mean in practice?

It means that some of mankind's most pressing problems, such as hunger, disease, and security, will finally have a solution. It means that the rise of driverless cars could save thousands of American lives each year, and perhaps hundreds of thousands more around the planet. It means a departure from millennia-old practices, such as the need for urban centers. It means that massive inefficiencies, such as the supply chains in Africa allowing food to rot before it can be fed to the hungry, can be overcome. It means that individuals will have more freedom in action, work, health, and pursuits than ever before.

By MURPH This is an invaluable resource for anyone hoping to understand the ways technology (in general) and digitization (in particular) will impact our future, both short and long term. DuBravac uses his extensive analytical expertise to illustrate where we are now--and how we got here--and where we are headed. With actual examples and predictions, this book will make any reader conversant in the important trends defining a post-analog age. Considering the fact that DuBravac is both a PhD and a respected economist, one might fear the book would be either impenetrable or full of jargon; on the contrary, it's lively, engaging and the author does all the heavy lifting to integrate multiple threads and story-lines. The reader will be informed, and is certain to be excited. An absolutely essential text that comes highly recommended.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Important and Necessary Book By Marcus Vorenus Engaging and entertaining, DuBravac's book is a welcome antidote to the usual denunciations over our digital future. DuBravac doesn't steer clear of the reasons behind those denunciations -- data theft, online harassment, etc. -- rather, he includes them as unfortunate consequences of the new world. Which is the best thing about Digital Destiny: the picture DuBravac paints isn't entirely bad and it isn't entirely good. It's real life. As he says, digital data will solve some of humanity's most pressing problems, but it will also create new ones. Moreover, DuBravac is firmly realistic in the rough road ahead: It's one thing to say that we'll all be driving automated cars in the future, slowly but surely eliminating the deadly toll of vehicle injury and death; it's something else to show how that might happen. The same applies to the digital economy overall, our "connected" homes, and healthcare. In the end, DuBravac's well-argued, well-researched book moves the conversation beyond the black-and-white into the territory we need it to be: this is our future, so we best get ready for it today.

Taylor I rate this 5 stars like the other reviewers, but keep in mind Shawn's bias. He's the chief economist for the Consumer Electronics Association. It isn't just about data. The digital world requires code. You learn to never buy Version 1.0 of anything especially self-guided autos. Woz begged HP to take a chance on their Apple personal computer. They didn't & the rest is history. The future is hard to predict & the author acknowledges that. As John Lennon said - "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". This book is a well-written piece on the "other plans" for the next 20 digital years.
