�The Jevons Paradox�, which was first expressed in 1865 by William Stanley Jevons in relation to use of coal, states that an increase in efficiency in using a resource leads to increased use of that resource rather than to a reduction. For example, doubling the efficiency of food production per hectare over the last 50 years (due to the Green Revolution) did not solve the problem of hunger. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fine review of Jevons By rb2006 The Jevons Paradox is one of the most important yet least understood aspects of the energy sector. Efficiency doesn't necessarily result in decreased consumption. Rather, it usually means greater consumption. John Polimeni and his fellow authors do a great job of explaining why Jevons was right.

By Technophobe01 I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It covers the topic of Jevon's paradox in great detail and maps out the dangers of ignoring it. The book has the ability to redefine your perspective of the role of technological innovation in solving the worlds energy problems alone.My one critique would be to reorder the chapters. Chapter 1 is a hard though worthwhile read and requires perseverance. The introduction and final chapter cover the keys points that are then supported by the other chapters extensive review of the factors that impact in the context of Jevon's paradox.Highly, highly recommended
