By Malvasia Vendetta While this is not the best-written erotica out there, I think it's a nice, cheeky satire of both that topic and of birding. Several traditional tropes and archetypes are to be found, and are tweaked in interesting ways--both in birding and erotica.Most interesting to me is that the main character, in his aimless drifting from bird to bird, and from woman to woman (often at the same time), raises an interesting thing about Birding: it's often about finding the Next Thing, rather than enjoying what what you have, or the bird in front of you.It's a little klunky, and needs some work, but overall, I was entertained, and laughed outright at certain points, and since I came into this with no expectations, it was a good way to spend an evening.

By A reading birder This little book's two subjects have so much in common, and both are so wide-open to satirical treatment -- and the author takes so little advantage of the abundant potential here for humor. This is a compelling example of neither of the two genres the book claims to participate in, and there is no real effort to integrate the two into anything resembling a plot. Every chapter follows the same tired scheme: a would-be titillating title, a list (nothing more) of destinations and birds seen, and a deadly earnest, deadly dull account of an intimate encounter of the non-feathered kind. You can hear the scissors shirring and the glue pot sploshing as the author clumsily puts together poor imitations of the most formulaic kind of big year reporting and the most predictable kind of other stuff. It's a disappointment.The one interesting thing about the book is the identity of its author. Unless this is the real live ornithologist Martin's younger brother, I assume that "Richard Woodcock" is a pseudonym, and not an especially imaginative one. It was easy for me to think of a dozen possibilities among writing birders in North America -- but I dismissed a few of them as soon as I opened the book and found it so bland and unimaginative, and I eliminated most of them as soon as I found that nearly all of the sentences were grammatical and the words spelled properly.The book is obviously written (or at least typed, or maybe dictated) by someone familiar with the birding festival circuit and, at least superficially, with several of the continent's major hot spots (even without trying, I come up with better double-entendres than the author ever does). The birding content is restricted almost entirely to lists, à la "I saw this and this and this and this"; most of those tallies are surprisingly plausible, though the narrator's unlikely discovery of trogons in Madera Canyon in winter might suggest that at least some are simply lifted from finding guides.The narrator is male, but I am still uncertain about the sex of the author. Style might provide a clue -- but there isn't any style to this prose. The adjective "adorable" and the adverb "hella" are usually thought of as gendered feminine, but certain of the physical descriptions reflect preoccupations more typically gendered masculine. Whoever the author is, I can only wish that s/he/it had spent a little time thinking the book through, investing it with a plot, and exploiting the real potential that the confrontation of two of everyone's favorite activities offers.Summa summarum: Should you read this book? No. Go birding or ... something.
