We fill mostly with ourselves the silence the dead leave behind them. In this original, ambitious, and compulsively readable novel, a young woman dies but continues to haunt the daughter she abandoned and the sister she betrayed. The Book of Squirrels is a rich chronicle of guilt, fate, and longing but, above all, the psychological and moral complexities of self-revelation.

A novel of depth and insight By Kirk Woodward In this remarkable novel, Stephen Johnson (author of Those That I Guard) successfully combines what the literary critic Philip Rahv describes as the two major strains of American fiction writing, which he labeled the “paleface” (the literature of self-consciousness and sensibility, for example, Hawthorne, Henry James) and the “redskin” (the literature of experience and energy, for example, Whitman, Mark Twain) in a narrative that is not only fascinating in itself but one that probes its characters to their personal, moral, and spiritual depths, told by an observer with a voice of objectivity… and sadness and compassion. I recommend this book to readers looking for outstanding American fiction. It’s a remarkable achievement.

A truly significant work of fiction By PBGNick One downside to today’s ease of entry into publishing is that the sheer volume of “product” makes it much more difficult for quality books to receive the notice they deserve. “The Book of Squirrels” is definitely one of those books deserving of such notice. It's a compelling story, with compelling characters, and creates at times an almost unbearable tension simply by letting human nature take its course. (As if that were really simple.) But "Squirrels" also provides a climax that will leave you simultaneously tearful and grateful . Many were the times I shook my head after having just read something I wished I could have written. I think this is a truly significant work of fiction.
